Introduction
Hi, my name is Laura Seidler, and I’m based in Berlin, Germany. Especially in the colder months, I love to travel, soak up some sun elsewhere, and explore what the world has to offer. While I’m home, you’ll often find me playing board and video games, reading, spending time with friends, and trying new things - most recently, I’ve adopted some plants and am now doing my best to make them survive!
Tell us about what led you to join DoiT!
Before joining DoiT, I worked for multiple companies that were DoiT customers. I was always impressed by everyone's dedication to providing quality service and how positively they were talking about DoiT as an employer. By chance, I got to talk to who became my manager at DoiT at an event in Berlin, and we had a great conversation about DoiT Flexsave, which was one of my favorite services as a DoiT customer. At the end of the evening, I told him, “Well, that sounds interesting; if you ever have an opening, let me know,” - and it turned out that a position was being opened just a few days later. This personal conversation really helped me understand more about DoiT behind the scenes and the challenges of the Engineering department.
What personal goals have you been able to accomplish since joining DoiT?
I’ve never been particularly good at work-life balance, often working long hours and being unable to stop thinking about work even when I wasn’t working. Since joining DoiT, I’ve changed things around quite a lot - I’m less focused on the hours worked and more on the impact I can make in the hours I’m at work. When I’m off, I can relax better, knowing that work will still be there another time, and it’s much more effective to be well-rested rather than forcing myself to get things done when I don’t have the energy anymore. I’ve spent a lot more time with friends and traveling, and I’m much happier about it, which I believe also makes me a better engineer.
How does your work as a Software Engineer impact DoiT customers?
Together with my team, I’m working on helping customers optimize their usage of the cloud. With DoiT Insights, we have built a feature that uses the unique knowledge and expertise of all of DoiT’s employees to generate tailored, actionable recommendations that customers can apply and realize actual $ savings. In addition to my role as a Software Engineer, I also have multiple years of experience working as a DevOps/Cloud Engineer. This enables me to translate the expertise provided by DoiT’s Cloud specialists to Engineering requirements, making sure the recommendations we provide to customers are as accurate and helpful as possible.
What impact do Software Engineers have at DoiT?
Almost everything customers see when using DoiT’s offerings was built by Software Engineers. Our work directly impacts the customer - positively or negatively. While we routinely release features and changes that delight customers, we also have a responsibility to work diligently to avoid releasing software riddled with problems. Additionally, with an Engineering department split across multiple independent teams, we also directly impact each other. There’s a lot of room to help others, and often, taking 10 extra minutes to answer a question for someone can make their work significantly easier. Lastly, whenever other teams at DoiT have an idea for a new feature for customers, the implementation usually falls on Software Engineers, so the way we work also directly impacts everyone else at DoiT.
What advice would you give candidates interested in joining DoiT?
Do your research! There’s a ton of information on DoiTs offerings out there already, and you’ll get even more during the hiring process. We’re not looking for people who just translate tickets into code but for those who show an active interest in the things we’re building. Especially for more senior roles, your work will not just be writing code. It will also include contributing to feature development, doing research, and keeping the bigger picture of a feature or the product as a whole in mind. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have during the interview process.
Why is now a great time to join the DoiT Kubernetes team?
We’re just getting started! Our team has just formed a few weeks ago to build an entirely new feature for our customers, which will provide recommendations on their Kubernetes usage, and even fix some problems fully automatically. We have a lot of ideas, and more are coming in regularly. Engineers joining the team now will have a lot of room to influence the direction and future of both the feature and the team, have their ideas heard, and make them a reality. Since we are looking for Software Engineers with Kubernetes experience, this is a great opportunity both for Software Engineers who have worked with Kubernetes in the past as well as Kubernetes/DevOps/Cloud Engineers who want to transition or get back into Software Engineering.
