Introduction
Hi Everyone, I am Erez Shtayman, based in Israel. I am a father of four adorable children, which makes parenthood my primary profession, while all the rest are basically hobbies. Jokes aside, I enjoy working out and traveling the world when I'm not working or parenting.
Tell us about what led you to join DoiT!
DoiT is a brand you can’t ignore when working in a high-tech ecosystem. Almost every company that uses the public cloud is a DoiT customer, so when the opportunity to join came along, I seized it without hesitation. What attracted me most was the fact that engineers at DoiT spend a significant amount of their time building innovative software rather than just maintaining existing code. The strong emphasis on learning was a huge bonus, and the remote-first setup was a sweet addition that made the decision incredibly simple.
What personal goals have you been able to accomplish since joining DoiT?
Becoming a software engineer is actually my second career. After spending five years in civil service as a manager, I started fresh and studied software engineering from scratch. DoiT is my third position as an engineer, and I set a personal goal to return to people management. Happily, I achieved that within a year when I was promoted to team leader.
How does your work as a Software Engineer impact DoiT Customers?
At DoiT, we embrace a very open and bottom-up approach, where everyone is encouraged to voice their opinion. This is particularly true for the engineering team, as we can influence the customer experience directly, with minimal bureaucracy and often immediate results. My team and I contribute daily to DoiT’s platform.
Over the years, I’ve been involved in releasing many customer-facing features, such as Budgets, External APIs, SSO Integration, Presentation Mode, and more. We are currently working on CloudFlow, an exciting new feature set to launch soon that will revolutionize how customers automate their FinOps processes.
What is the culture of the Software Engineering team?
Full ownership is the most dominant cultural aspect of engineering at DoiT. We own our features from design to production. While we work closely with UX designers and product managers, we take full responsibility for the testing process and manage the entire CI/CD pipeline. Unlike some companies, where getting code into production is out of engineers' hands, at DoiT, we own the whole process, including monitoring the features we've delivered.
Another major cultural aspect is the international, multicultural nature of our day-to-day work. Our teams are spread across different nationalities within the same time zones, but we also collaborate globally with colleagues from all over the world. I might start my day with a call from a colleague in Australia to solve a customer question about the platform, continue with daily meetings with peers across EMEA, and wrap up the afternoon brainstorming with product professionals on the East Coast of North America. Life becomes much more interesting when you engage with people from different countries and backgrounds every day.
How have you grown in your career here at DoiT?
Since joining DoiT, I’ve been clear with my managers that while I enjoy being an individual contributor, my true passion lies in people management. So, when the opportunity arose, it was no surprise that I applied. I’m fortunate to have supportive managers who mentor me daily. Although I’ve been a manager for almost three years now, I continue to learn new things every day and still get the chance to do hands-on coding.
What advice would you give candidates interested in joining DoiT?
While working remotely is a significant perk for many, it can also be challenging for some. It requires a great deal of responsibility and self-initiative. Make sure you're comfortable with this setup. I also mentioned ownership as a key cultural aspect. Being an owner means going the extra mile, even if it goes beyond the traditional scope of your role. Lastly, it’s always impressive when candidates understand the bigger picture, recognize the business context, and offer thoughtful opinions on how we can improve.
Why is now a great time to join the DoiT Engineering team?
There are some incredibly exciting projects happening right now, and anyone joining the team will have the chance to help shape the future of our product offerings.
