Do'er Spotlight - Hannes Hayashi

Introduction

Hi Everyone. My name is Hannes Hayashi, and I am based in the lovely little town of Göttingen in the middle of Germany, where I was born and grew up. I also lived in Munich for a few years, but when my wife and I got married, we decided to move back to my hometown and build a house here. We now spend most of our free time with our adopted cat or walking around in the forest behind our house.

Tell us about what led you to join DoiT!

To be honest, I did not know much about DoiT before the company approached me. However, talking to the recruiter and doing some research on my own, I quickly came to understand that this company does things differently and would be an opportunity to do something different myself. As a consultant, I was very much used to traveling to customer sites and not seeing my family for most of the week. DoiT offered me a way to capitalize on all of the specialized knowledge I acquired during my consulting years and use it to help customers efficiently right from home. All the while, I was more connected to my co-workers than I had ever been. DoiT was built from the ground up to be a remote-first company and has handled the usual challenges superbly.

What personal goals have you been able to accomplish since joining DoiT?

While I haven't even been with DoiT for a year, I can already claim that within the first few months, I submitted an enhancement proposal that has directly impacted how we handle tickets from Japanese customers by collecting the language skills of our Do'ers and syncing them with our ticket routing software. I also used my Japanese skills by supporting our new team there during the AWS Summit in Tokyo this year. I also had the opportunity to mentor other Do'ers and help them accomplish their personal goals, which was an incredibly rewarding experience.

How does your work as a Sr. Cloud Architect impact DoiT customers?

The greatest thing about working for DoiT is that you get the feeling of using your knowledge to help someone every day, not just at the end of a project. I have worked with many customers and many different environments in my career as a consultant, and I was surprised by how often a bit of niche knowledge comes in handy when you have such a diverse customer base as DoiT. Whether helping a customer mitigate a DDoS attack or teaching them how to make the most of a service, there is always the feeling of having made a difference.

What impact does a Sr. Cloud Architect have at DoiT?

Everyone at DoiT has the same opportunity to make a difference, regardless of their position or tenure. If you have a great idea, your manager will always be open to supporting you. In fact, most of the processes we follow as engineers are defined by and reviewed by engineers. We know what we need to work efficiently to help our customers, and if someone feels like there is a better way, they can propose it, and if there is agreement, the process is put into action. DoiT is very much NOT a "top-down" hierarchy, and everyone can make an impact.

What makes DoiT so unique?

For me, that would be two things:

1. The remote first approach that I already mentioned.

2. The ability to work with customers around the globe. With most companies, even larger, international ones, you are usually assigned to a specific region and work with customers in that region. Since joining DoiT, I have regularly worked with companies from all around the world. And this is not just an interesting experience, but it also translates to job security because you are not dependent on the economic situation of any one country.

Where can we find you outside of work?

I love spending time in nature, so I take every opportunity to go hiking or just for a walk in the forest. I also enjoy reading while relaxing in my hammock with a good cup of tea. Yes, I have an indoor hammock as well!
